Review: Possess by Sarah Dalton

Possess by Sarah Dalton
(Mary Hades #2)

Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal, Horror

Mary Hades is drawn back into the world of the macabre as she moves with her family into the mysterious old house, Ravenswood. The mere mention of Ravenswood induces terror among the locals, and when strange things begin to occur, Mary and Lacey decide to get to the bottom of the secret hidden in the historic house once and for all.
As a dark power gathers, Mary finds her life becomes interconnected with the disturbing events that transpired in 1847 to eleven year old Liza Blair. The more Mary is drawn into Liza’s story, the more she realises someone close to her is in grave danger from the sinister energy at Ravenswood.
Set in the backdrop of an unsettling forest, and with strange neighbour Emmaline Delacroix obsessed with death and séances, Possess will take you even deeper into the murky depths of Mary Hades’s unusual life.
I read the first book in this series, Mary Hades, last year and loved it. It was a great paranormal read that kept me on edge the entire time. Possess was equally good, but felt very different from Mary Hades. This book has a very decidedly horror feel to it. It kept me up at night more than once until I had to stop reading it after dark!

Mary and Lacey's relationship is one that I love. They are such great friends. Reading about their strong bond is refreshing. I actually may like Lacey a bit more than Mary, but that's because she can be a bit snarky. It was so fun to check in on those two. I can't wait to do it again!

The setting of this book is what really got me. The house itself really becomes a character. The author did a fabulous job at pulling me into the story. The build-up with the diary was also really creepy! It was a nice addition to the story.

All in all, you cannot go wrong with this series. Fans of paranormal stories with an extra dose of spooky will be drawn into the world of Mary and Lacey. I cannot wait for the third book in this series!

Review: Give Me Your Teeth by Jeff Chapman

Give Me Your Teeth: A Fae Tale
by Jeff Chapman

Genre: Horror

Like most children, ten-year old Jimmy wonders where
the Tooth Fairy keeps all those teeth. It's a silly
question to laugh about. He's happy to play along to get some coins, confident there's no such person. As he and his friends know, their mothers play the role of the Tooth Fairy, but in the middle of the night, Jimmy's world turns upside down. He learns there's more to his mother than he ever imagined, and the Tooth Fairy isn't so harmless.
I love, love, LOVE Jeff Chapman's writing style. His novellas always blow my mind, and Give Me Your Teeth was no different! It's the perfect amount of creepy and suspense. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I read this. Much like Jimmy, I was left wondering what the heck several times!

There is not a dull moment in this book. The part of me that always roots for the underdog cheered on Jimmy during his interactions with the bullies. And the ending is beyond satisfying! I cannot wait to read more from Jeff Chapman!

Once it has been seen, you cannot go back. And once infected; there is no cure.

This collaboration is in honor of the brave men and women in our Armed Services who willingly lay down their lives for our freedom. Words could not possibly express our undying gratitude, so we have banded together, doing what we do best, to show our appreciation.    Talk about creepy and absorbing! I very much enjoyed Shana Festa's Time of Death: Induction, so whenever she approached me about reviewing this anthology I was all over it. On top of that, the proceeds support a veterans charity! No guilt buy, y'all!

This is a completely random comment, but these stories were placed in a really well thought out way. Whenever I was finished with one story, it was easy to flow right into the next one. The stories range over a broad set of subgenres, and I enjoyed every single story. Of course, my favorites were the zombie ones. But I really cannot find a complaint about any story in this collection. My TBR list has grown so much!

If you're a zombie fan like I am, you really need to pick up At Hell's Gates! There are so many stories in this collection that you're bound to find a new favorite. Just remember to keep the light on while reading this one!

Review: Dead Over Heels by Alison Kemper

Dead Over Heels by Alison Kemper

Genres: Young Adult, Horror, Post-Apocalyptic

The end of the world just might be their perfect
beginning…

Glenview, North Carolina. Also known―at least to sixteen-year-old Ava Pegg―as the Land of Incredibly Boring Vacations. What exactly were her parents thinking when they bought a summer home here? Then the cute-but-really-annoying boy next door shows up at her place in a panic…hollering something about flesh-eating zombies attacking the town.

At first, Ava’s certain that Cole spent a little too much time with his head in the moonshine barrel. But when someone―or something―rotted and terrifying emerges from behind the woodpile, Ava realizes this is no hooch hallucination. The undead are walking in Glenview, and they are hungry. Panicked, Ava and Cole flee into the national forest. No supplies, no weapons. Just two teenagers who don’t even like each other fighting for their lives. But that’s the funny thing about the Zombpocalypse. You never know when you’ll meet your undead end. Or when you’ll fall dead over heels for a boy…
I'm next door neighbors with North Carolina. Whenever I'm lying in bed, I can look out our deck doors and see North Carolina and the Smoky Mountains. And let me tell you, I felt like I was right at home whenever I read Dead Over Heels. Alison Kemper was able to capture the essence of my home and it only added even more to this incredible story. I instantly warmed to Cole and his southern ways.

I'm always a fan of a good zombie book. Though I can admit that a lot of them start to blend together at times. That's the thing with Dead Over Heels that I loved. There were some different aspects of this book that surprised me. I really appreciated Alison Kemper's deviation from the norm.

The romance in this book is sweet and not overbearing. It fits seamlessly into the story, and I enjoyed it immensely. Like I mentioned before, Cole was instantly a favorite of mine. It took a little longer with Ava, but she's a solid heroine. She is full of courage despite of setbacks that are out her control and scary enough without zombies involved.

If you're a fan of the less gory types of zombie fiction or Tracey Ward, I really think you'll enjoy Dead Over Heels. Not only did it have zombies, but it also had the perfect amount of wit and romance.

Lazy Weekend Reviews #5

In an effort to catch up on reviews and indulge in a lazy weekend, I've rounded up a few of my recent reads for quick reviews below. Included are Sadie the Sadist by Zane Sachs and Predator and Prey by James D. Horton.

Sadie the Sadist by Zane Sachs

Genres: Horror, Humor

Like many people, Sadie feels undervalued and
frustrated. Employed by a supermarket, she plots to
murder coworkers—or lure them into the employee bathroom for a quickie. Sick of being treated like a robot, she taps into a powerful (and deranged) alter-ego and transforms into Sadie the Sadist.

READER BEWARE: This book contains graphic violence, psycho/sexual incidents, and Sadie’s favorite recipes. X-tremely Black Humor/Horror.

Whoa. Sadie the Sadist is just as humorous as it is depraved and horrifying. I went from laughing uncontrollably to cringing and wishing for mind bleach while reading this one. It only took one sitting for me to finish this book, though.

There is plenty of gore to go around with Sadie the Sadist, but I didn't mind it. I was genuinely intrigued in seeing the world through Sadie's point of view as her sanity rapidly deteriorated before my eyes. This book is nothing like what I'd normally read, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. If you have a strong stomach and can handle unbridled depravity, then you'll definitely enjoy Sadie the Sadist.

Predator & Prey by James D. Horton
(Predator & Prey #1)

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Lily works the night shift at a radio station, taking calls
from forlorn and damaged souls who can't sleep. She
knows their pain and they find solace in her comforting words. The city is ruthless; nameless creatures roam the streets and prey on the lost and innocent.

As she leaves work one night at the crest of dawn, Lily comes face-to-face with depravity. She is a survivor at heart, but she is unfairly outnumbered and surrenders to her fate. From the shadows an ally emerges, the mysterious and alluring, Wolf. After coming to Lily's aid, he takes her to shelter.

The immediate danger has passed, but the incident is far from over. Wolf tells Lily she is not prey, and sets off into the night with her by his side to set a wrong right. What she sees when entering the dark heart of the city will change her existence forever. Has Wolf taken on a force too big? Will Lily survive the night?
Predator & Prey? Yes, please! This novella is very short, coming in around 30 pages. The punch that James D. Horton packs into those pages is phenomenal, though! This story came to a close way too early for me. I enjoyed every element of it, and I can't wait to spend more time with Lily and Wolf.

Lily is my kind of heroine. She radiated determination and grit. I wish more heroines were written like her! I really enjoyed Wolf, too. I chuckled at his ironic name. The relationship between the two really works out well. Intensity, of the good kind, is one of the adjectives I'd use for them!

Like I said, this book is on the shorter side. But I am still amazed at how quickly I was drawn into it. You just simply cannot go wrong with reading about Lily and Wolf. I know the second book in the series is going on my TBR pile!

Novella Quick Reviews

Last Request: A Victorian Novel by Jeff Chapman

Genres: Gothic, Horror

"For the love of God, cut off my head." The last
request in Uncle Silas's will shocks everyone
speechless, everyone except his favorite niece, Anna. More than death itself, the claustrophobic Silas fears a premature burial. Will Anna's elders carry out Silas's request? Anna is certain they will not. It's up to her to do the right thing, even if it is a bit grisly. Armed with butcher knife and candle, Anna heads for the crypt underneath the church in the dead of night. All does not go according to Anna's careful planning.
Step inside a dark story in the tradition of the penny dreadful, at times humorous and horrifying, but don't close the door behind you. Someone might lock you in.
Jeff Chapman, I am in awe of you. Last Request: A Victorian Gothic was such a satisfying read. The descriptions were much appreciated. Chapman is prolific at building suspense through surroundings, and I was easily able to lose myself in the world he so masterfully crafted in this short story. I flew through the pages because I could not go without knowing what the conclusion would be.

Gothic, Victorian and Southern, are a soft spot for me. I feel like the author was able to capture the essence of the genre with this story. It worked so well for me as a fan. I cannot praise Jess Chapman enough. Without a doubt, I'll be seeking out more of his work.

The Breakup Artist by Nichole Severn

Genres: New Adult, Contemporary Romance

Demi Shepherd breaks hearts for a living—and she learned long ago that love just isn’t worth the pain. But when one of her clients ends up dead, Demi is going to have to put her heart on the line to save her own life.

A professional breakup artist, Demi is hired to end other people’s romances. When one of her clients is murdered—with Demi’s fingerprints on the murder weapon—her only hope for clearing her name and finding out who framed her is Jack Austin, a world-weary hunk who’d just as soon let her rot in jail.

Jack is a hard-bitten undercover agent, driven to expose and bring down a money-laundering organization, and he’s not willing to risk his life or career for Demi. Until Demi proves she’s innocent of the crime—but far from innocent in the bedroom.

With cops and killers on their trail and a smoldering romance ready to ignite, Jack and Demi have to fight together to save their lives, as well as their damaged hearts.
I really struggled to read this one. Even though it was very short, it was hard to keep on track. The story was very choppy. It seemed to bounce back and forth and never felt like it established a fluid flow. The Breakup Artist never felt like it could happen, either. I had a hard time believing the story that the author was building. It was all over the place.

Holy insta-lust and insta-love. I am very much a character reader. I enjoy stories more based on the characters in them and how well I relate to them. The characters in this story never got my interest. Their actions were so unbelievable that I could never develop any connection to them or the story.

If you're looking for a quick read set in Las Vegas, you may enjoy this. There was a lot of stuff I had to look past just to finish The Breakup Artist.

This book is a very fast read. It felt like it was over right after I got started reading it. But it packs quite a lot into that small space. It was an intriguing introduction to a series that promises all of the paranormal elements that I love. The characters felt well developed, which I was surprised at given the shortness of this book.

There are a few editing flaws, but nothing that takes away from the story as a whole. I was easily able to overlook them and get lost in this story. This isn't the first book that I've read by Larissa Ladd, and I hope it isn't the last. I've grown to really enjoy her writing style and characters.

Blog Tour: Talking Walls and Cigarettes by Erin Beck & Kelli Beck

Talking Walls and Cigarettes
(And Other Dark Tales)
by Erin Beck & Kelli Beck

Genre: Horror
Talking Walls and Cigarettes is a collection of seven dark short stories that deals with both real life monsters and those that dwell within us. A bartender still grieving the tragic death of her brother, shunning from her family, and the whispers in the street is visited by a man who appears out of thin air to offer her a way out of her own personal hell in The Salesman. A poor family is cursed by a mysterious old man in the woods and the children are at risk for falling victim to their parent's unspeakable acts in Porcelain. The title story follows a man as he is tormented by demons in his own mind. In Homecoming, can a young woman find what she's looking for years after her father's abduction by other-worldly beings?
First Sentence:
Phillip drank the cough syrup straight from the bottle and set it on the desk, wiping the residue from his lips with the back of his hand.

Last Sentence:
The detective took her in his arms, and she buried her head in his chest and felt there were no end to the tears and no end to the screams.

Comprised of seven short stories, this book delivers for its genre. I made the mistake of trying to read some of these stories right before bed, and I am not ashamed to say that I slept on top of my boyfriend with a night light on. Several of the stories effortlessly awaken a primal fear buried deep in us all.

The writing was impeccable in its ability to draw you into the story and never let you go. Though the stories are short, the scenes are spun so rapidly that you cannot look away. One story in particular, In His Cellar, absolutely frightened me to no end. There was no happy ending at all, and it played on a very real fear that nearly every person experiences.

The rest of the stories were varying degrees of scary and skin crawling. Some opted for the in your face scare tactic, while others went for the subtle ending that made you stare, open mouthed at the final page. Some stories have a paranormal twist to them. For me, the stories that are always the scariest do not involve paranormal elements. The truly scariest thing out there is the human mind, and this book showcases that.

If you're a fan of the horror genre, this book should be on your shelf. It isn't a campy, monsters say boo book. It is a genuine attempt to uncover your deepest fears and capitalize on them while weaving a story so brilliant around you that you cannot escape. I daresay it'll be a long time before I venture into the horror genre again.

Author Interview
1. What's your writing ritual?
Erin:  I wouldn’t really call it a ritual, but when I write I do it as soon as I wake up in the morning while sipping a few cups of coffee.
Kelli: I don't have a ritual anymore, unfortunately. With my work schedule bouncing around all the time I don't always have the energy to sit down at night and write. I spend most of my Sunday's writing, and if I can get away with it, Saturdays too.

2. What is the one book that you think everyone should read?
Lamb by Christopher Moore. It's The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal and it's hilarious, and sad, and epic. It's about Jesus' lost years told in first person point of view which gives Jesus' story strong intimacy. It's definitely a comedy but it's also a great story about discrimination, faith, love, and betrayal.

3. What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Erin: The hardest part of writing for me is finding the confidence in my abilities.
Kelli: Right now it seems to be sitting down and writing. Mostly that's due to my work obligations. After a long day it's tempting to lounge around and watch some Netflix. Also: I'm addicted to Netflix.

4. Where did the inspiration for Talking Walls and Cigarettes come from?
The inspiration for Talking Walls came from things we may fear.  I personally have an irrational fear of alien abduction so writing Homecoming was particularly challenging for me.

5. Why did you decide to do a collection of short stories instead of a full length novel?
We chose to write a short story collection instead of a full-length novel because we wanted to try out self-publishing. We knew of writers were doing it but were a little nervous about it, so we decided to try out a smaller project before putting our full-length novel out there.

6. What authors and/or books have had the greatest influence on your writing?
Erin:   I am very influenced by Kurt Vonnegut and Christopher Moore.  I know Talking Walls doesn’t really reflect that but I love their style and their stories and wish I could write more like them.
Kelli: I have been in love with Stephen King since I was a little kid. His stories always pulled me in and I could completely get lost in the worlds for the duration of my reading time. Other big influences are Roald Dahl (Matilda especially), Christopher Moore, and J.K. Rowling (we have the same birthday) :)

7. Which actor/actress would you want to portray you in a movie about your life? Why?
Erin:  The actress I’d pick to play me in movie would be Ellen Page, only because I’ve been told that her character in Juno has reminded others of me.  I’m not sure how tall she is, but she appears short in movies, and I too am short.   Also she’s a great actress; I think she could pull off my craziness.
Kelli: Emma Stone. Mostly due to the personality test I just took via Google to find out. :) Emma Stone with red hair though, because I always dye mine red.

8. Which television show would you most want to appear on to promote your book?
Erin:   I love The Big Bang Theory.  I don’t know how the story line would go on the show with me promoting my book but I think it would be a lot of fun to be on that show.
Kelli: Oh man! American Horror Story!

9. What should we expect next from you? Do you have something in the works?
Our next work will be a full-length novel. We've gone through two drafts but there's still a lot of work to be done. It's a quirky kind of coming-of-age story that's both funny and heartbreaking.

About the Authors:
Erin Beck was born and raised on the mean streets of Chatsworth Illinois.  Every day was a struggle to survive, to overcome, to persevere.  At the age of twelve, she took up writing.  This passion for the written word saved her from such fates as teen pregnancy and tooth decay, that which have befallen many other great Chastworthians.  Erin is also the author of The Pursuit of Hair and co-author of Grabappleberry Punch: The Adventures of Mister Tennison Volumes One and Two.  Her influences include Kurt Vonnegut, Stephen King, and Christopher Moore.  Erin spends her leisure time tossing a ball around with her dogs and parasailing, and has on more than one occasion been caught napping in a box full of packing peanuts.  She is a drop-out of Hogwarts where she majored in English and minored in the contortion arts.  She has scaled the dark tower; she has trekked through middle earth; and she thinks cannibalism is a real hoot.  Erin now lives in the woods with her boyfriend and survives off of insects and pine needles.  She wrote portions of this short fiction collection on homemade paper and her own blood.

When she is not gold mining or globetrotting with her husband, Kelli spends her time writing, reading, and playing with her two dogs. Often described as “worldly” and “well-traveled,” Kelli is envied amongst co-workers and friends alike. She has a knack for reading minds and can often predict the future. Many people worldwide come to her for financial advice and money as she is the sole proprietor of the only money tree in existence. Her heroes include her father, Stephen King, and Albus Dumbledore. She has read the Harry Potter series many times over and is proud to share her birthday with The Chosen One. She has been described as a fearless leader, charismatic, even bulletproof.
