Review: Invaded by @melissa_landers

Invaded by Melissa Landers
(Alienated #2)

Genres: Young Adult, SciFi

The romantic sequel to Alienated takes long-distance relationships to a new level as Cara and Aelyx long for each other from opposite ends of the universe...until a threat to both their worlds reunites them.

Cara always knew life on planet L’eihr would be an adjustment. With Aelyx, her L’eihr boyfriend, back on Earth, working to mend the broken alliance between their two planets, Cara is left to fend for herself at a new school, surrounded by hostile alien clones. Even the weird dorm pet hates her.

Things look up when Cara is appointed as human representative to a panel preparing for a human colony on L’eihr. A society melding their two cultures is a place where Cara and Aelyx could one day make a life together. But with L’eihr leaders balking at granting even the most basic freedoms, Cara begins to wonder if she could ever be happy on this planet, even with Aelyx by her side.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Aelyx, finds himself thrown into a full-scale PR campaign to improve human-L’eihr relations. Humans don’t know that their very survival depends on this alliance: only Aelyx’s people have the technology to fix the deadly contamination in the global water supply that human governments are hiding. Yet despite their upper hand, the leaders of his world suddenly seem desperate to get humans on their side, and hardly bat an eye at extremists’ multiple attempts on Aelyx’s life.

The Way clearly needs humans’ help . . . but with what? And what will they ask for in return?
I was so happy to dive into Invaded and be reunited with Cara and Aelyx. They're one of my favorite YA couples, y'all! L'eihr was sort of shrouded in mystery in Alienated, and I was so glad to be able to experience it first hand through Cara's stay there.

For a big majority of the book, Cara and Aelyx were separated. That did kill a bit of the romance, but I think that the communication between them kept that spark alive and kept me interested. This book focused less on them meeting, getting over their differences, and falling in love and more on the world as a whole and their future together. Some of the decisions Cara made did make me scratch my head, but she's on a planet entirely unlike her own. The only tether she has to her home and herself is her brother, who leaves halfway through the book. Cara went through some intense changes, and I was happy with the way she handled them. She had a lot thrown at her in this book, and I felt like she responded strongly and true to herself. I still want to be besties with her!

Cara wasn't the only one dealing with a lot. Aelyx had his fair share of issues, too. Again, sometimes I wanted to shake him because I couldn't understand some of his decisions. But when you think about the immense pressure on his shoulders, the entire fate of the human race y'all, I realized that I would crumble under that. I think Invaded shows a lot more of who both characters are, and I like where Melissa Landers is taking them.

Some things that are hinted at in Alienated are brought more into focus in Invaded. The Jaxon storyline surprised me, but I liked it. I thoroughly disliked him and I'm curious to see if he'll pop up again. There is a lot of development for all of the characters, not just Aelyx and Cara. I hope to see more of that in the future!

All in all, Invaded was such an amazing follow-up to Alienated. It answered a lot of questions, but also left some of its own. I cannot how much love I have for this series. SciFi fans and skeptics of SciFi both need to read these books. They're perfect in every way, and my fingers are crossed for another book about Aelyx and Cara! I desperately need it!

Until Midnight by Melissa Landers
(Alienated #1.5)

Genres: Young Adult, SciFi

**FREE**
Don't miss the *free* romantic holiday story that connects ALIENATED and INVADED!

Cara and Aelyx only have one day to spend together before he returns to earth and she travels to Aelyx's home planet, L'eihr. Homesick and worried about the upcoming year apart, Cara is desperate to make these final hours count. Worst of all, Cara is missing Christmas, stuck on board an alien spaceship. When Aelyx learns that Cara is forgoing her favorite holiday, he tries to recreate Christmas in space by researching traditional earth customs…but a few things get lost in translation.
Christmas is my most favorite, so whenever I heard that there was a Christmas-y novella starring Cara and Aelyx, I was like why, I do believe I will! I just cannot get over how amazing Melissa Landers' writing is. This is the first time we get a really good look at life on L'eihr. It really made me excited to read Invaded, which is mostly set on L'eihr instead of Earth.

I loved how Cara and Aelyx interacted in this book. It was so warm and fuzzy. I was so sad whenever it was over, but luckily I had Invaded on hand to keep reading after I finished this one. Fans of Alienated HAVE to read this! It's the perfect addition to this series. It made me love Cara and Aelyx even more!

Alienated by Melissa Landers
(Alienated #1)

Genres: Young Adult, SciFi

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.
Melissa Landers is the answer to my needy SciFi prayers! I was raised on Star Trek. I would live in a planetarium if I could. Space fascinates me. But I struggle with science fiction books. They usually seem too stuffy or drawn out for me. And there aren't many SciFi novels to be found in YA anyways. But I just knew I'd love Alienated when I first saw it. The cover absolutely sold me, and oh my gosh. It kept that promise. Alienated is the YA SciFi book I've been waiting for all my life!

Cara is such a good character. She's your typical overachiever with an extra dose of fiesty. But the arrival of Aelyx in her home as an alien exchange student turns her world upside down. Landers does such a fabulous job at showing how Cara grows over the course of this book. I was so impressed with her when I finished this book. I totally want to be her new best friend!

credit
Aelyx and his culture were so intriguing to me. The author was able to introduce a whole new world to me without making it an info dump. That's a feat! I was giving Aelyx a lot of side eye in the beginning, but he quickly grew on me. I think I may even like him more than Cara at this point! I'm a total L'annabe!

Everything about this book is seriously great, y'all. The world building, the climatic ending, the characters, the science fiction elements, the romance; it's all so amazing! There was absolutely nothing that I did not like about this book. Seriously! Go pick up Alienated right now! You will NOT be disappointed!

Check back tomorrow for my review of Until Midnight, an Alienated novella, and on Tuesday for my review of Invaded, book number two in this series!

Review: Alliances by S. Usher Evans

Alliances by S. Usher Evans
Razia Series #2

Genre: SciFi

Piracy is a game. Whom do you trust?

Lyssa Peate has found a tenuous balance between her double lives - the planet-discovering scientist and space pirate bounty hunter named Razia. No longer on probation, Razia still struggles to be thought of as more than a chocolate-fetching joke, and Lyssa can’t be truthful to those closest to her. But both lives are turned upside-down when feisty government investigator Lizbeth Carter shows up to capture the same pirate Razia is after.

Lizbeth’s not interested in taking Razia’s thunder; rather, she convinces the caustic bounty hunter to help solve a mystery. Somebody’s hiring pirates to target government ships, and there’s a money trail that doesn’t make any sense. From the desert planet of D-882 to the capital city on S-864, the investigation leads them deeper into a conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of the Universal Government - and to one of the most painful chapters in Lyssa’s past.
I was so excited to dive into this book after reading Double Life and get back into Razia's world! She's the epitome of what I look for in a female lead, and I love reading about her. S. Usher Evans has outdone herself with Alliances. It was the perfect addition to this series!

The spirit of Razia is what I love! The author has definitely built her up more in this book. Razia shows beautiful character development, and I got even more attached this go around. There's also a budding romance that holds a lot of promise. I cannot wait to see how it pans out. Life is changing fast for Razia, and I love tagging along!

SciFi fans will flock to this amazing series! If you love strong females, slow burn romances, and in depth world building, look no further than the Razia Series. You simply cannot go wrong with these amazing books!

Review: Double Life by S. Usher Evans

Double Life by S. Usher Evans
(Razia Series #1)

Genre: SciFi

Piracy is a game. How much are you worth?

Since she was a little girl, everyone - from her father to the Great Creator himself - told Lyssa Peate the same thing: she's worthless. But when she becomes the pirate bounty hunter Razia, she can see the price tag on her own head. Employed by one of the four pirate syndicates, she uses bank transactions and her considerable wits to capture rival members. At least, she would be if Razia's boss ever gave her a chance. It's a man’s world, and all she’s allowed to hunt are purse snatchers while she languishes on probation.

To pay the bills, she's stuck in her old life as Lyssa, discovering and analyzing distant planets and selling them for cash. She's doing just enough to stay out of trouble, pretending to be continuing her father's mysterious research while away for long periods of time. Her slimy boss is always asking questions and even assigns one of her younger brothers, Vel, to intern with her. Already struggling to keep the balance between her double lives, she tries everything to rid herself of the kid...

...until the universal police mistake Lyssa’s intern for Razia's hostage.
I've been on such a space kick lately! Double Life was a book I was looking forward to, and S. Usher Evans definitely delivered. But this book wasn't just SciFi. It had a lot of depth to it that I appreciated. It added many extra layers to the story that made it stand out.

The one thing that stood out the most to me about the main character, Razia, was that she was relatable. Her story resonated so well with me and formed an instant bond between us. There is plenty of masterful character development to go around, and I was impressed with S. Usher Evans' handling of it. It was brilliant and so enriching to the story.

Double Life is an entertaining read that excels beyond its genre. Those who are not the biggest fans of SciFi will find something to love and latch onto in this wonderful story. YA readers will definitely be drawn to Razia and her world.

Lazy Weekend Reviews #6

In an effort to catch up on reviews and indulge in a lazy weekend, I've rounded up a few of my recent reads for quick reviews below. Included are Control by James D. Horton, Heart Tales by Celine Garcia, and Perfect World by Shari Sakurai.

Control by James D. Horton
(Predator & Prey #3)

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Two weeks have passed since Lily became a vampire
and things couldn't be worse. She is starving, out of
control, and Wolf has vanished. Her maker, Athene, is patient, but fails to help Lily tame the beast within. After Lily's introduction to Society goes horribly wrong, she is sent to train with Griogar, a narcissistic vampire with questionable tactics.

A powerful member of Society, John Genosoa, has secretly arranged for Wolf's mate to return. The distraction works. Wolf and Luna's reunion is passionate, yet laced with memories of insurmountable loss. Even so, neither is able to refuse the animalistic magnetism drawing them together.

When Lily reaches a new low during a session with Griogar, Wolf reappears. She's furious, but vulnerable to his charm and follows him beneath the City. Lily finds out Wolf has spent ages chasing a legendary tale of transcendence and discovers who has been keeping him away.

Lily is forced to put aside her heartache when Genosoa's plan threatens the City's inhabitants. Genosoa's magic is strong, but not strong enough to keep the existence of vampires a secret from humans. He needs souls to sacrifice.

Wolf, Lily and Luna are dispatched by the Keeper and must act fast to stop the killing of innocents. Screams of agony and a scene of destruction greet them, but they are confronted with a much more sinister obstacle and it's too late to turn back. What begins as a battle turns into an all-out war for their very survival.
What a roller coaster! This series just keeps getting better and better. Control introduced a lot of new elements to the series, and I was blown away. But I'm totally ready for another story in this series! I won't rest until Lily and Wolf get their happily ever after (or at least a happy for now)!

Lily has went through so many changes since this series started, and it's so fun to watch her story develop. James D. Horton devotes so much to these characters and story, and it really shines through. Paranormal romance fans will flock to this series!

Heart Tales by Celine Garcia

Genre: Romance

Three charming tales of that never ending roller
coaster called life, each one sure to pack a sweet
punch of candy for the heart. One story involves a girl and a mystery box with handwritten song lyrics. The second follows a guy on the road with memories of the girl that got away, and finally a teen girl who can actually speak to the source of her angst…her heart.
I absolutely adored these books! They were filled with realistic characters and situations that I really enjoyed. Heart Tales is filled with fun and light reads that romance fans will fall in love with. Each story has unique elements that really make them stand out.

My favorite story was Audio Frequency. It involved a music store and really took me back a few years! If I could only pick one word to describe Heart Tales, it would be heart-warming. I suspect that readers will drawn to these stores!

Perfect World by Shari Sakurai

Genres: SciFi, LGBT

London, 2115

It is the year 2115 and the world is very different. With climate changes, natural disasters and war shaping the landscape, England has become a nation made up of several super cities and wasteland in between.

Eric Rawlins is a genetically engineered superhero created by the London Security Agency (L.S.A) to defend and protect the city against both national and international threats. With his superior abilities, celebrity status and beautiful girlfriend, Eric appears to have the perfect life. However, it is an illusion created by the L.S.A in order to control him.

Eric's nemesis is the charismatic Adam Larimore. The only son of billionaire business tycoon Victor Larimore, Adam is gifted with a genius level IQ as well as the same longevity as Eric.

When the actions of the L.S.A throw the two of them together Eric finds himself questioning everything that he has ever known as well as discovering the true course of events that led to Adam turning to a life of crime. As they become closer Eric realises that the L.S.A may be the real threat to London. But can he trust Adam or is he part of Adam’s plan for revenge against those who have wronged him?
Perfect World caught me completely off guard. I expected an LGBT romance set in a SciFi world. But what I go was a really deep book that focused on many different elements. While Adam and Eric's romance isn't the highlight of the book, it is still sweet and I enjoyed it. I actually like that the author paid more attention to the whole story instead of focusing on the romance.

The pacing was great. There were never moments of lag, and I enjoyed this book all the way until the end. The ending, though. It's a bit of a cliffhanger. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Adam and Eric's story isn't over yet!

Review: Fearless by Tracey Ward

Fearless by Tracey Ward
(Bird of Stone #2)

Genres: New Adult, Paranormal Romance, SciFi

My name is Nick Carver and I have a superpower.

Be jealous. Be very, very jealous. I've only begun to touch the edges of the power lying coiled inside of me. No one knows what I'm capable of. Of how far I can go, least of all me. That should scare me but it doesn't because let's be honest, nothing does.

Not even the fact that I'm dying. Again.

She saved me once before, I have every faith she can save us all now. If there's one thing in this world I wholeheartedly believe in, it's Alex.

You're probably wondering how we got here. How we went from a frozen island halfway between Russia and a polar bear's butt to this deadly tropical paradise in French Polynesia. How we formed our gang of misfit, pissed-off superheroes that got us here. How after everything we've been through I've ended up right back where I started - gasping my last breathes alone in the cold. I'll gladly tell you, but listen close. Pay attention. I don't have a lot of time...

Tracey Ward has done it again, y'all.

The Good
The ending.
THERE'S GOING TO BE A THIRD BOOK. Tracey surprised the crap out of me, and I couldn't be happier! To date, Nick and Alex are my favorite couple of hers. I actually read this book slower than normal so I could savor the time I had left with them. SQUEE.

Alex and Nick.
As I mentioned above, Nick and Alex are my favorite couple that Tracey has written. (So far.) The chemistry between them is amazing. There is no doubt that they were made for each other. The way that they grew in Fearless just solidified my adoration of them. Their banter is priceless.

The humor.
I probably looked crazy while reading Fearless. I would go from laughing out to loud to holding back tears because the end was sneaking up on me. The humor that Tracey injects into this story is brilliant. It's just what this story needs.

The plot.
Wow, y'all. Talk about edge of your seat, nail biting. Tracey Ward really shows us that she's meant to be writing with Fearless. The way she paces the story is flawless. It's a rollercoaster of emotions and feelings. But damn, I'm glad I went along for the ride.

I'll stop my rambling. Just go read Fearless already.

The Bad
Nothing.
Not even kidding.

The In-Between
Nothing.
For real.

Review: Twisted Reflections by Shay West

Twisted Reflections by Shay West
(Adventures of Alexis Davenport, #2)

Genres: Young Adult, SciFi

Alexis Davenport is learning to come to grips with her
ability to travel through time, but she still hasn’t been
able to stop the evil Drifter and his Master from trying to alter the past.

When she travels back to ancient Egypt, Alex gets a most unexpected surprise; she meets someone who can help her figure out how to use her powers, another Traveler like herself.

But can Alex learn how to control her gift before Drifter finds a way to stop her from meddling in his Master’s plans?
Shay West continues an action-packed adventure with Twisted Reflections. This book is a perfect follow-up to Dangerous Reflections. It picks up in the perfect spot and launches the reader right back into the complicated world of Alexis Davenport.

Even more so than the first book in the series, I could really tell how much Alex has evolved as a character. Shay West does a fantastic job with character development, and Twisted Reflections is a testament to that. A lot of new elements are introduced into her life, and the lapse between time traveling gives the reader a perfect chance to experience how Alex handles her extraordinary life.

The ending was very fitting, and I cannot wait to continue this amazing series. Shay West has outdone herself with Twisted Reflections, and I cannot wait to watch her grow even more as a writer.

Pretty Little Indies: Chelsie Shock

I'd like to welcome Chelsie Shock to Pretty Little Indies! Keep scrolling for my review of her thrilling SciFi nove, Rogue!

Rogue by Chelsie Shock
(The Novi Orders #1)

Genre: SciFi

In the future the New World has suffered bombings,
world wars, the tectonic plates have shifted, the
population has seen sicknesses, radiation spills, genetically modified animals and humans, and the population has dwindled into two classes: The elites and everyone else. The Novi Orders have been enacted by the capital city and control everyone completely, except those who have hidden or rebelled, the rogues. Will is one of the survivors who has lived the quiet life of a sailor and fisherman living on what was once the Washington state coastline. When he meets an old man who used to work as a scientist for the elites, they sail to places he never imagined he’d see… the islands where the elite’s live. He meets a beautiful woman who is part of the high society by marriage, and he is thrust into plans for an uprising, a revolution, murder, war, oppression, survival and entangled in a forbidden love he can’t fully comprehend.
The action packed into the pages of Rogue puts you on the edge of your seat! I was swept away by the dystopian style setting and action surrounding it. Chelsie Shock does not skimp on details and a solid back story which makes this a very immersive and enjoyable read.

At times, I felt the pace of the story drag. But overall, the dynamic of the world and how the characters related to each other spurred my interest and pushed me on. There is even a sprinkling of romance in there for those of you who love to swoon!

The premise of Rogue was definitely interesting. It wasn't too far fetched, and those books are the ones that terrify me! If I walk away from a book realizing that it could actually happen, you better believe I'll lose sleep over it. To me, that shows just how amazing the author is and Chelsie Shock and Rogue definitely fall into that category!

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review with no compensation.

Chelsie writes mostly science fiction, and also has a certification in Holistic Nutrition. She can be found reading anything by Ray Bradbury, cooking or traveling. She currently lives in Florida with her husband and needy dog.

Lazy Weekend Reviews #3

In an effort to catch up on reviews and indulge in a lazy weekend, I've rounded up a few of my recent reads for quick reviews below. Included are Rook by J.C. Andrijeski, Her Favorite Honeymoon by Barbara Lohr, and Her Favorite Hot Doc by Barbara Lohr.

Rook by J.C. Andrijeski
(Allie's War #1)

Genre: SciFi

Like most humans, Allie's spent her life distancing
herself from Seers, a race of human-like beings
discovered on Earth in the early 1900s. That changes after catching her boyfriend in the arms of a hot band groupie, and Allie goes from San Francisco artist slacker to the girl wearing the GPS anklet in about sixteen seconds. Being stuck with community service is the least of her problems, though, compared to the shock of discovering who--and what--she really is.

Yanked out of her life by the mysterious Revik, who drives her crazy in all the best and worst ways, Allie finds out that her blood may not be as indisputably human as she always thought. Through Revik she learns the truth: that Seers are nothing like she thought, that the world is nothing like it appears to be... and that she has far more in common with Seers than she ever wanted to believe.

Now on the run from a group of anti-human,terrorist Seers called Rooks and her own human government, Allie must learn to navigate a secret shadow world behind her own, a world filled with superhuman Seers with their own battles raging...and their own agendas around the fate of humanity. When Allie's family and friends get dragged into that war, things suddenly get a lot more personal, and Allie learns she may be the only one who can stop it.
SciFi can be a touchy genre for me. I'm a diehard Trekkie. Spock is my spirit animal. But I usually just can't get into the stereotypical SciFi books. That was not the case with Rook. It was able to capture my attention from the start. It honestly didn't read like the usual SciFi. It was very unique and that made every difference in the world for me.

I loved the setting of Rook. I felt like I was right there with Allie thanks to the generous and vivid descriptions. There were plenty of characters to meet, too. They were easily connectable, and I found myself quickly invested in their lives. All in all, I think that J.C. Andrijeski has crafted an original and unqiue SciFi tale with Rook.

Her Favorite Honeymoon by Barbara Lohr
(Windy City Romance #2)

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Hard to keep your head on straight in Italy. Even
harder to keep your heart.

The wedding might be off, but the honeymoon? No way will Amy forfeit the week in Tuscany. Travel Chums pairs her up with Mallory. But Amy expects a woman, and the man from Savannah doesn’t expect her surprise. From Rapallo to Venice, can they keep their pact for a platonic tour? So many temptations. So little time. They finds lots of excuses to break the rules because there are lots of surprises along the way.

Fresh pesto in La Cinque Terra, peach bellinis in Venice—hard to put it behind. Outrageous fun and tempting decisions for the Windy City girl taking .... her favorite honeymoon.
I absolutely adored the first book in the Windy City Romance series, Her Favorite Mistake. So whenever I had the chance to read and review the next two books in the series, I knew that I HAD to. Barbara Lohr is a wonderful writer who's reminiscent of Sophie Kinsella and Emily Giffin. Chick Lit is a guilty pleasure of mine, and Lohr definitely knows how to deliver!

Amy was one of the characters that stood out to me whenever I read Her Favorite Mistake, so I was happy to hear that she would be the focus of the second book in the series. She was very dear to me, and I felt like I honestly knew her. The setting is what really brought this book together for me. Barbara Lohr delivers another light-hearted romance that is a guilt free indulgence with this one!

Her Favorite Hot Doc by Barbara Lohr
(Windy City Romance #3)

Genre: Contemporary Romance

One feisty midwife. One Hot Doc with a secret. One
mission trip to Guatemala where there’s no place to
hide. McKenna Kirkpatrick presents a challenge for the head of her department when she joins Montclair Specialty Hospital. Ranked a Chicago Hot Doc, Logan Castle has a reason for supporting established protocols while McKenna pushes the envelope. She also likes to push his buttons. Thrown together on a department revamp, Hot Doc soon discovers that McKenna generates her own heat.
Has he ever met a woman this outrageous? Has she ever been this drawn to a colleague’s bedside manner? They may have grown up on opposite sides of the L tracks on Chicago’s West Side, but Logan’s like the chocolates hidden in McKenna’s desk, so hard to resist. When her Hot Doc joins Midwives in Action for a summer mission trip to Guatemala, McKenna wonders if working together in the remote highlands of Central America will resolve their differences... or end the romance for the Windy City girl.
Her Favorite Hot Doc is another wonderful addition to the Windy City Romance series. I feel like with each book, the series just gets better and better. There are plenty of ups and downs in this book, and I enjoyed being swept along the journey with the characters.

The love story between McKenna and Logan is my favorite out of the three so far. They each have their own issues, and I enjoyed the character development throughout this book though I would have liked a bit more. The pacing is phenomenal. If you're looking for a romantic and light summer read, you have to pick up the Windy City Romance series!
