Pretty Little Indies: Helena Shaw

Happy last Monday of January, loves! Time is flying by!
I'm so excited to review Helena Shaw's Harvest Moon today! Fans of paranormal will love this book!

Harvest Moon by Helena Shaw
(Night Hunters #1)

Genres: Paranormal Romance

She’s pretending to be someone she’s not.

For two years, Dawn Garrett has been on the run from some very bad people. The small town of Goosemont, nestled deeply in the Appalachian Mountains, seems like the perfect place for a young woman to disappear.

He isn’t who he says he is.

When Jase Byrnes is working a job, he needs to blend in, and he works alone. He knows what dark creatures lurk in the shadows and prowl in the night, and it’s his duty to hunt them.

Not all is right in the picturesque town of Goosemont. Hikers are going missing at an alarming rate and people are turning up dead. It isn’t bears or wolves that are hiding deep in the mountain, but a terrifying evil that Jase has come to hunt. It’s the same evil that has claimed the life of Dawn’s best friend and with Jase’s help, she is ready to fight back. Will Jase be able to finish the job? Or will his attraction to Dawn only put her in more danger?
As soon as I saw that this book was set in a sleepy town in the Appalachian Mountains, I just knew I had to read it. My love for my home goes deep. And Helena Shaw did not disappoint! Harvest Moon was a phenomenal paranormal read that highlighted a lot of the reasons why I love paranormal romances.

Dawn was an excellent heroine. She was very believable and relatable. I think the author did a wonderful job at writing her. I loved the relationship between her and Jase. Usually I shy away from instant connections, but the way their relationship played out was very organic.

All of the elements of Harvest Moon worked so well and cohesively together. The mystery is paced at such a good pace and I couldn't turn away from this book! It approaches paranormal from a unique perspective, and fans of PNR will fall in love with Dawn and Jase's story!

Pretty Little Indies: Katarina West

Hi, lovelies! Today I'm really excited to share the beautiful Witchcraft Couture and Katarina West!
Keep scrolling for my review!

Witchcraft Couture by Katarina West

Genre: Fantasy

Oscar Pellegrini is a talented fashion designer with
a deadly enemy: his own critical mind. He destroys
much of what he designs and has been drifting for years, gradually retreating from the fashion business he loves but holding on to his dreams of success.

A chance meeting with a former girlfriend triggers a creative crisis so deep that Oscar escapes to Russia, where he drinks and despairs like never before. Just when he thinks he has lost everything he discovers a magical machine that turns ordinary outfits into irresistible sartorial triumphs. Oscar takes the machine back to Italy – and before he knows it, he has become famous for his designs, and celebrities and socialites are fighting to be first to wear his gorgeous garments.

But the happily-ever-after ending for the fashion messiah turns into a nightmare when his dresses acquire a life of their own, gaining energy and evil as time goes on. Haunted by his creations, a dark secret he is no longer able to hide, Oscar finds himself fighting for his life and sanity, and searching for the answer to a question he never knew existed.

Is there such a thing as stolen genius, and if there is, can it turn against the very person who stole it?
Wow! is my first reaction to Witchcraft Couture. This is such an intriguing book and truly unlike any other that I've ever picked up. At first, I was worried if it'd grab my attention. But boy, did it! I was quickly swept up in the world of Oscar and his antics. The writing was so well crafted and I easily got lost in the pages of Witchcraft Couture.

Oscar is such a fitting character. He's full of life and character, and I loved that the story was written in a way to give such an intimate peak into his mind and life. I enjoyed the layout of the book, like a journal, and think it was clever of West to write this way.

Again, this is something entirely unique. It was an amazing read and really surprised and entertained me the entire time. If you're looking for a refreshing read that is written flawlessly, look no further!

Katarina West is a novelist, journalist and the author of Witchcraft Couture, a fantasy novel about a fashion designer who becomes an overnight success thanks to magic (out in November 2014).

She was born in Finland, has studied in London and Florence – where she completed a doctorate in political science and published a book based on it – and now lives in an old, isolated farmhouse in Chianti with her husband and son, and a German ghost. (Yes, you might hear some German murmured on a moonlit November’s night…)

Katarina is currently working on a new novel – and, writing and country life permitting, tries to read anything and everything well-written that comes into her hands.

Magic of the Gargoyles by Rebecca Chastain

Genre: Fantasy

Someone has kidnapped a nest of helpless baby
gargoyles and is using them as pentagram focuses,
devouring their magic—and their lives—for a horrific, illegal power boost. Swept into the dangerous underworld of black magic, earth elemental Mika Stillwater must cobble together her limited resources and skills to have a chance at being the hero the baby gargoyles desperately need. If she fails, the city will be at the mercy of the gargoyles’ murderers and their overwhelming destructive magic.

But pitting herself against powerful black-magic villains is proving just as deadly for Mika as for the gargoyles.
I was absolutely blown away by Magic of the Gargoyles and blown away by Rebecca Chastain. The descriptions of the world that Mika resides in immediately caught my attention. From the very beginning, I was hooked! The book weaves together a tale with magic in a way that reminds me of why I love fantasy.

Mika was a great character! I loved her resolve at helping the baby gargoyles. I hope that I can read more about Mika and her magical worlds from this promising author. You cannot go wrong with Magic of the Gargoyles if you're looking for a quick fantasy read!

Pretty Little Indies: Heather Beck

Happy Monday, lovelies! Today I'm so excited to share Heather Beck and her YA paranormal romance, Frostbitten, with you guys!

Frostbitten by Heather Beck

Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance

Great beauty hides dark secrets...

Seventeen-year-old Anastasia Lockhart has never led an easy life, but when she starts getting into serious trouble, she’s sent to live with her grandparents in Cedar Falls. The small, picturesque town hasn’t changed since she visited four years ago, with one exception – the presence of a handsome, mysterious boy named Frost. Despite warnings from her grandparents and friends to stay away from Frost, Anastasia can’t deny their attraction, and the more time they spend together, the deeper in love they fall. Unfortunately, Frost has a secret that is beyond Anastasia’s wildest imagination, and she soon finds herself in the midst of a supernatural legend that has haunted Cedar Falls for years.

Can Anastasia and Frost’s love really overcome anything, or are their fates much darker?

Frostbitten has all of the elements that make a great paranormal romance! There's an amazing romance, well thought out characters, enthralling descriptions, and werewolves! The descriptions are what really drew me into this story. They are so rich and welcoming that you cannot help but be absorbed.

Frost definitely has a bad boy edge, but he redeems himself over the course of this book! Anastasia is a bit on the dramatic side, but I enjoyed her nonetheless. Her and Frost make an excellent pairing, though. I really liked being able to follow their relationship as the story went on.

Heather Beck really has proved that she's an excellent writer with Frostbitten. The story line was developed and inviting. It's a beautiful story full of promise for Heather Beck's future writing endeavors! If you're a paranormal romance fan, I think you'll love Frostbitten!

Pretty Little Indies: Cynthia Witherspoon

Guest review by Sarah Buhl
I had never read a steampunk book before, but I have always wanted to. So I was excited to get my hands on this book.

I am also a HUGE fan of adventures that involve magic, sword fighting, shooting guns, and any other form of fighting. The swashbuckling-type action in Gilded Cages was fantastic. I loved one particular scene near the end of the book where someone... is not quite themselves.

This book did not disappoint me in the least.

Cynara des Jardin is a witch who has been captured by the Witchfinders. She has gone through torture and captivity and now her freedom is in her sight. She must complete a task for the Witchfinders and she will gain her freedom.

Those tasked with assisting her in completing her quest are Lady Abigail Moran and Simon Thorne. Simon becomes a close friend to Cynara and he wants nothing more than to keep her safe. Though he does want to ensure that Abigail is safe first--as she is the love of his life, though she does not know it.

The story alternates between chapters from Cynara's point of view and Simon's. The two become friends throughout the story and it is interesting to "hear" their descriptions of each other. I loved the fact that they were only friends and the friendship that they shared was a close one. They truly cared enough to sacrifice themselves in order to keep the other safe.

It was great to watch all the characters grow closer as the adventure proceeded. I appreciated the minor characters in this story--especially Sir Jamison Mitchell. It was a great introduction to each of them for me.

I had never read books by either K.G. McAbee or Cynthia D. Witherspoon. Upon finishing Gilded Cages I saw that there are many other books that involve the characters and I look forward to reading more about them.

Pretty Little Indies: K.R. Conway

Happy Monday, y'all! I'm so excited to tell you about K.R. Conway's Undertow today! It's an amazing YA paranormal romance that I think you'll love!

Undertow by K.R. Conway
(Undertow Series #1)

Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal Romance

Luckless Eila is unknowingly the last of her kind: Rare.
Gifted. Breakable. Stunning Raef is her kind's
historic enemy: Soulless. Lethal. Lost. A legendary death 160 years before would set their lives to collide, forcing a beautiful killer to become a savior, a simple wallflower to become a warrior, and ruthless destiny to become a death sentence.
What an amazing and absorbing read! The details and descriptions from K.R. Conway blew me away and I was sucked into this book in no time. It's a really great beginning to a series. It has that classic paranormal romance feel without seeming like all of the other books. Undertow definitely stands out in the sea of YA paranormals!

I really connected with these characters. They seemed authentic, and I could relate to different parts of all of them. Characters are always a big deal for me, so that was a relief! There are different layers to the characters, and I loved getting to know more and more about them as the story progressed! It definitely kept my attention!

I had no idea what to expect whenever I started Undertow. It can always be hit or miss with me and YA paranormal romance. But wow! This author absolutely blew me away. If you're a YA paranormal fan, you simply have to read Undertow!

What can I say – I’m one part crazy and one part professional writer. I’ve been a journalist since 1999, an editor, graphic designer, critique partner for other writers, and book reviewer. I also teach the devious art of telling lies for money to various impressionable young people (i.e. I teach fiction craft classes for teens and adults).

Because I believe the words “FREE TIME” refer to a parallel universe from which I am banned, I find myself also on the Board of Directors for the Cape Cod Writers Center, a member of the SCBWI, and the driver of a 16-ton school bus. Apparently I tweet my random thoughts @sharkprose and yup – I am on Facebook, because even my BFF’s dog is. I can’t rank below a dog . . . seriously, I need more friends. The dog is killing me.

I am also the author of UNDERTOW, a dark, Urban Fantasy YA, which follows 17-year-old Eila Walker, last in a brutal race of humans and her unlikely allies, including a soulless boy who becomes her beloved bodyguard. The second book in the series is STORMFRONT launched the summer of 2014, and will be followed by a prequel novella, CRUEL SUMMER, in early 2015. UNDERTOW is also on WattPad.

I live on Cape Cod with my two children and husband, two odd shaped dogs, and a cage-defiant lovebird that sleeps in a miniature tent. This is Cape Cod – even the animals are nuts.

Pretty Little Indies: Kai Strand

This week's Pretty Little Indie is Kai Strand! Stick around for my reviews of her amazing YA novellas addressing homeless youth.

1. Describe Worth the Effort in one word.
Acceptance

2. What inspired you to write about a homeless youth?
The county I live in has the sixth largest homeless population in the United States (crazy, since I think I live in the boondocks.) Homelessness is often misunderstood in the first place, but I really believe most people (especially teens and young adults) aren’t even aware of the underage homeless population. I wanted to not only make readers think, “Wait…really?” but also to let people know it isn’t only drugs and poverty that sends people to the streets. Though Ayden’s situation might be rare, it isn’t unheard of, and there are so many other factors that land people on the streets, or have them couch surfing, as well.

3. How similar are you and Ella?
Not at all. I borrowed some traits from my daughters to form Ella. They are both very self-possessed and grounded. However, Ella is pretty much uniquely herself, and she’s very real to me. The fact she considers herself a coward and that continually inspires her to do more is a trait I consider hers alone.

4. Which part of Worth the Effort was your favorite to write?
The romantic spots, of course. Ella is so surprised to find appealing qualities in the boy she was originally terrified of and then to have her heart melt for him…that was super fun to develop. And Ayden! That boy makes me *le sigh*. He spends most of his time inside his own head, so he’s a really good thinker and I love what he thinks about Ella.

5. Dog-eared pages or bookmarks?
Bookmarks. In middle school I went through a phase when I thought dog-earing was super cool and I’ve been paying homage to the book gods ever since. Of course, I have a million legitimate bookmarks around the house, but usually end up sticking a receipt into my book. I’m fully convinced there is a bookmark monster under my couch.

6. What's next for you, Kai? Any new projects or releases?
I have a brand new middle grade book out this month, The Lumpy Duckling. It’s the third (standalone) book in my Weaver Tale series. This one is about friendship and I really, really love writing about friendship.

I’m putting the finishing touches on the third and final book in my Super Villain Academy series—tentatively called, Super Bad—before I send it off to my publisher. I’m so excited to get this one out there! I think this book is full of surprises and I really love the ending.

Worth the Effort: Ella's Story
by Kai Strand
(Worth the Effort #1)

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance

Ella Jones is a coward. There is a teen boy living in
the alley behind her work and she is terrified of him.

Desperate to leave behind the stereotypical and judgmental world she was raised in, Ella forces herself to make a true connection with seventeen-year-old Ayden Worth. As their friendship grows Ayden’s quiet, gentle ways teach her true courage.

But there’s more to Ayden’s story than Ella knows. When their worlds collide in the most unexpected place, Ella feels betrayed. Will she find the courage to learn who Ayden really is, or will she determine he’s not worth the effort?

WORTH THE EFFORT: Ella’s Story a young adult contemporary romance novella at 19,000 words.
This is such a beautiful story that needed to be told. I'm so glad that Kai Strand decided to share Ella and Ayden's story. Homeless youth is a big problem in the US, but too often a blind eye is given to this plight. Kai Strand does a phenomenal job at capturing the raw reality of the issue.

Though this is just a novella, I felt like Kai Strand really captured the essence of her characters. In just a short time, she was able to show the growth and development of Ella. I definitely recommend this emotional story to all fans of realistic Young Adult fiction.

Worth the Effort: Ayden's Story
by Kai Strand
(Worth the Effort #2)

Genres: Young Adult, Contemporary Romance

Seventeen-year-old Ayden Worth shouldn’t have to
seek peace of mind in the streets. But as family
pressures mount, his anxieties increase, and he turns his back on comfort for a life in homeless camps and back alleys.

Then one fateful day he runs into the only person he ever wanted to know better. Ella Jones. His memories paint her as kind and undemanding, and it seems the years haven’t changed her. Her simple expectations draw him to her. Against all odds, a relationship buds and grows.

Yet, as Ayden repairs his life, Ella suggests he help others who also struggle. Will Ella turn out to be just like his dad, expecting more from him than he can give? Or will he prove that he is worth the effort?
Wow. The emotion in this book surpasses the first, and I was blown away. This book is so much more than teen romance. It's about self-discovery and self-acceptance. It was a beautiful and encouraging story.

At first, I was weary of reading this once since it's the same story as Ella's but told from Ayden's point of view. It didn't feel that way whenever I read Ayden's story, though. There is so much substance that you really get swept away and forget that it's a retelling. Again, I cannot recommend these two books by Kai Strand enough. They are deeply emotional, engaging, and wonderful.

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review with no compensation.

Pretty Little Indies: Scott Silver

Y'all, I'm so excited to have Scott Silver on for today's Pretty Little Indies! There are far too few male indies in the Young Adult age group, and I'm so excited to share Scott's debut, The End of Violet and Abby, with you guys today!

The End of Violet and Abby by Scott Silver

Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal

Violet and Abby pledged to stay best friends forever,
a vow put to the ultimate test when Violet dies in a
tragic accident—and comes back. Now boys are turning up dead, attacked by a creature both alien, and terrifyingly familiar and Abby is beginning to suspect that her best friend may have returned...different. Funny and heartbreaking, ‘The End of Violet and Abby' combines the sharp observations of Mean Girls with the sarcastic wit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer to tell the story of two young women struggling to save their friendship—and each other—from an ancient evil that threatens everything they love.

It seems like every time that I find a Young Adult book written by a guy, I absolutely adore it. And Scott Silver's The End of Violet and Abby was no different. I was totally engrossed in this book from the start. At times, I had to remind myself that the writer was a male. Usually, you can tell whenever a male writes females characters. But Scott was seriously spot on. I loved it!

Violet and Abby are both fantastic characters. I feel like the author devoted a lot of time to perfecting them and it really shows. There were times that I laughed, cried, and screamed at them. Abby was my favorite, and I truly felt a connection to her.

Seriously, you guys. If you love some snarky attitudes on characters that will make you laugh and cry, you have to pick up this book. I'm so blown away by Scott Silver and The End of Violet and Abby. I hope to see a lot more from Scott!

**I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review with no compensation.

1. Describe The End of Violet and Abby in one word.
Depends. Some days I say it’s ‘heartbreaking.’ Other days I say it’s ‘bitch-tastic.’

2. Where did you get the inspiration for the plot from? It's so unique and interesting!
Funny you should mention that, because I kind of stole the premise (In writing we call it ‘borrowing’ or ‘paying homage’). Few years ago I saw this movie on Netflix called Jennifer’s Body with Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried. And it pissed me off. So. Much. It upset me because I loved the premise. This idea of two best friends being pulled apart by a supernatural force really spoke to me and yet the movie totally dropped the ball. Then for the next week ideas kept popping into my head about ways to tell that story and get it right. Seriously, by the end of the week I had 10 pages of notes scribbled down and that was the start of Violet and Abby.

3. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, which would you pick?
CivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders. It’s his debut collection and it’s mindblowing. Emotional, surreal, heartbreaking, and utterly hilarious. This guy’s the alpha and omega for me and had a huge impact on my writing. In fact I was fortunate enough to take a summer writing seminar with him years before he got big. At the time I was struggling with how to incorporate my oddball, snarky humor into my work and George gave me some great tips that I still remember to this day. Next time I saw him he was on the Colbert Report. Glad he’s doing well.

4. It's unusual to see a guy writing a Young Adult book from a female point of view. What made you decide to write the book that way?
I knew from the start that the story would be in Abby’s voice from her perspective, so I paid special attention and made sure that everything about her—hopes, fears, strengths, shortcomings—were genuine. It’s funny because when I first sent the book out to beta readers for feedback the stuff I was most concerned with was the observations on ‘Girl World’ and teen life. And yet that’s the first thing everyone wanted to talk about and seemed to resonate. So I guess I did my job!

5. Dog-eared pages or bookmarks?
I always lost bookmarks when I was a kid, so now I fold back pages. It’s bad and I know I should stop. At this point I would also like to apologize to the Seattle Public Library System for returning many, many books in poorer shape than when I checked them out.

6. What's up next for you? Any projects or new releases coming up?
Right now I’m doing the rounds supporting Violet and Abby, but I’ve got some plans for new stuff in the coming year. A short story for sure and possibly even the first part of a new book. Anyone interested can connect with me on Twitter @thesilverdome or join my email list here and become official members of the Silver Society. It’s lots of fun, we have ice cream sandwiches delivered to the Dome every other Friday.

Scott Silver is a writer who’s lived all over the US from the suburban tranquility of New England to the muggy sprawl of the Deep South to the neon playground of Las Vegas. He studied creative writing at the Fine Arts Center in Greenville, South Carolina and at the University of Georgia.

His spare time is spent reading comics and YA Lit, listening to cheesy synthpop, hosting trivia nights, and catching up on all the TV shows (so please, no spoilers). He lives in Seattle, WA. The End of Violet & Abby is his first novel.
