Pulled Beneath
by Marni Mann
Genres: New Adult Romance
What happens when you uncover years of secrets and find out everything you thought to be true was a lie?
Drew Stevens finds her world turned upside down when her parents are brutally murdered. Soon after, she learns she inherited a property in Bar Harbor, Maine, from recently deceased grandparents that she believed had died when she was a baby.
Drew travels north to settle her grandparents’ estate, but finds more questions than answers as the truth starts unraveling. What she didn’t expect to find was Saint, whose reputation is as tumultuous as his past. But the very thing that brings them together is the same thing that keeps them emotionally caged.
With Saint's scars so deep and Drew's so fresh, can the pair heal from their painful wounds or will they be pulled beneath the darkness of their pasts?

First Sentence:
My body glided through the water with hardly any drag.
Last Sentence:
So that was exactly what we did.
The mystery in this book was my favorite part. I was constantly kept on the edge of my seat as I continued reading, and I anxiously awaited each new clue and revelation. Marni has a very talented approach to writing, and I enjoyed the way she told the story. The plot was great at drawing you into the story.
My downfall with this story was the characters. I never felt connected to Drew. The mystery of her family was very interesting to read about and discover, but I got frustrated with Drew as the story went on. She put me in the mind of Bella from Twilight for a lot of the story. I wished that she had pursued her past more relentlessly than she did. Saint was too much of a cliche for me to get behind. I'm not a fan of the bad boy with angst. It wasn't the way he was written; it was just a personal preference of mine.
This story is a very good fit for the New Adult genre. Marni has a great book with this one. Regardless of my frustration with the characters, I know that this book will be a big hit in NA fiction. It blends all of the elements of the genre perfectly in a compelling journey into the secrets of the past and the temptations of the present. The ending was very fitting, and I was happy for Drew at the end of the story.
I'd recommend Pulled Beneath to fans of NA without pause. It's an enjoyable read with the usual offerings of angst, mystery, and romance.
