Am I the Only One: Review Regret

This is a new feature here at Pretty Little Pages where I discuss my quirky bookish habits in an effort to find out if I'm the only one!

Am I the only one who gets review regret when revisiting old reviews?

So, this all started whenever I started going back to my old posts to FINALLY update them to match my layout. I gave Perfected by Kate Jarvis Birch four stars. That isn't bad, BUT. I realized that I think of that book often, I'm dying for the sequel, and maybe I was too stingy with stars. It should have been five stars!

As I went through more reviews, I realized there were a few books that I felt this way about. So besides immediately knowing that I had to blog about this, I wanted to know how to fix it.

Do you guys get review regret?
Do you repost reviews or update them if your feelings change?

  1. I did this a while back when there was something going on with my images. I had to walk through every post to see if they were still up to date and I updated a lot of reviews :) Edited some mistakes and most of the times I also adjusted the rating. I want to feel confident about the things on my blog. The old reviews still make me cringe, but at least they portray how I feel about the book now with an up-to-date rating :)

    1. I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one who's done this! I've been updating star ratings, but I may add an update note to the review, too.

  2. hahahaha! I totally understand this, though most of the time I'm not stingy enough with my stars. But sometimes there are books that you just need to let simmer a little after finishing. :)

    1. I thought I had the issue of not being stingy enough, too. But nope. Totally the opposite!

  3. I am impressed that you've taken time to reformat old reviews... I am WAY too lazy to do this... I wonder if I could pay someone lol

I saw that someone (I forget who) did an annual (or maybe semi-annual) post where they re-rate their books based on their feelings after the fact... I wish I remembered who it was and where I saw it, it was really interesting

    1. An annual post to update reviews and talk about any changes of heart would be interesting to see! Now I want to know who did it, too!

  4. I wrote about something very similar to this recently, where I questioned if it was "appropriate" to review your reviews - https://confessionsofabookgeek.wordpress.com/2015/01/15/do-you-review-your-reviews/ the responses were quite interesting! Ultimately, I think it's up to the individual to decide, but yes I have gone back and adjusted ratings slightly (.5 either way, but enough to matter to me!) R x

  5. I feel actually quite embarrassed at my taste in books some time back, when I read my earlier reviews now.I want to go update all the ratings and reviews but I feel too lazy whenever I try to sit down to do it:)

    1. Hah. I would spend hours and hours doing that, but I really need to!

  6. You know what could be kinda cool? Showing the ratings next to each reviewed book's name in your Review tab. Then you could have columns for original rating and updated rating, if it changed at all. Would be neat to have a sortable list by what you rated best :) Doing that would be more likely to show a person the new rating, since it's less likely they're going to scour old reviews. Just a feature suggestion that could maybe help :)

  7. I've experienced review regret before. It prompted me to change a number of star-ratings on old reviews last summer. Most of the books that I rated 4 and 5 starts were actually only 3 star books =\ I was very lenient back in the day because I think I was afraid of hurting feelings.

    1. I had that same problem. Too many books got 5 stars when they were only 3 star reads. Argh!

  8. I so agree, I have thought that numerous times. I haven't changed my ratings, but I almost think I should

  9. I agree with your thinking, sometimes I go back to fix old posts so they can match my new blog layout - then, I realized I was too kind with my ratings with some of the books and I change it LOL great post<3 <3 Benish | Feminist Reflections

    1. I still have some reformatting to do, so I may change ratings as I go along too!

  10. I think the only thing I regret is my initial reviewing format. Looking back it looks untidy and I know I need to go and update the layout to match my new one, but seeing how bad they were puts me off :)

    1. I think we all have that! It took me several months to figure out how I wanted my reviews to look.
