Elixir
The Red Plague Trilogy #1
by Anna Abner
Publisher: Mild Red Books
Publication Date: February 26, 2014
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic
The red plague has devastated the human race, turning billions of people into zombies with red eyes and an insatiable hunger for human flesh.
The virus sweeps through the population so quickly a possible cure is left to rot. Seventeen-year-old Maya Solomon may be the only survivor who knows where it is. But to reach the lab in Raleigh, North Carolina she will have to outrun the infected boy tracking her every step and cross into a city swarming with monsters.

First Sentence:
A buzzing circular saw woke me five minutes before my alarm was supposed to go off.
Last Sentence:
"Please wake up and say it again."
The characters in Elixir were a very dynamic bunch. Ben was my favorite one, because I was so intrigued by him. I'm dying to know what happens to him during the rest of this series! Maya is a great main character. I very much enjoyed following her journey and learning about her life and the world around her. Hunny did get annoying, though. At first, I thought she'd be endearing but she quickly got on my nerves.
The detail in this book is amazing. I've been all over North Carolina except the Raleigh-Durham area, but I still felt like I was there. I was never left wondering how, and what, things were happening because Anna Abner did an excellent job at keeping the reader informed and invested.
If you're a fan of zombies books, I would recommend Elixir to you in a heartbeat. Fans of Tracey Ward and her kick-ass heroines will enjoy this quick and inviting read, too!

Thanks, Kristen! I appreciate the review. :)
ReplyDeleteAhh I too am on a zombie/post apocalyptic/survival binge! I just can't seem to get enough of them right now, I'm reading them faster than I can find them! I definitely recommend Enclave by Ann Aguirre (I love this series! Definitely one of the best post apocalyptic series I've read), The Other Life by Susanne Winnacker (This one is only okay but still enjoyable), and In the After by Demitria Lunetta (Sooo good!). If you liked Elixir I think you will love these!
ReplyDeleteFor me though, this book just wasn't up to par. I thought I would love it because it sounded right up my ally! I definitely think this story and plot have potential but I just could not enjoy this one. It felt way too shallow for me, as if the story wasn't completely fleshed out, as if the characters weren't completely whole, as if the the thought wasn't completely finished. I think a big part of this was that the I didn't like that the beginning of the story was rushed and pretty much skipped over (I would have loved to have seen the fall of humanity by the red plague), and the characters just didn't seem to gel with me. I disliked all of the characters pretty much which made me sad :(
I haven't finished this series though so I'm hoping the last book will be a whole ton better for me!
