Guest review by Sarah Buhl
I had never read a steampunk book before, but I have always wanted to. So I was excited to get my hands on this book.

I am also a HUGE fan of adventures that involve magic, sword fighting, shooting guns, and any other form of fighting. The swashbuckling-type action in Gilded Cages was fantastic. I loved one particular scene near the end of the book where someone... is not quite themselves.

This book did not disappoint me in the least.

Cynara des Jardin is a witch who has been captured by the Witchfinders. She has gone through torture and captivity and now her freedom is in her sight. She must complete a task for the Witchfinders and she will gain her freedom.

Those tasked with assisting her in completing her quest are Lady Abigail Moran and Simon Thorne. Simon becomes a close friend to Cynara and he wants nothing more than to keep her safe. Though he does want to ensure that Abigail is safe first--as she is the love of his life, though she does not know it.

The story alternates between chapters from Cynara's point of view and Simon's. The two become friends throughout the story and it is interesting to "hear" their descriptions of each other. I loved the fact that they were only friends and the friendship that they shared was a close one. They truly cared enough to sacrifice themselves in order to keep the other safe.

It was great to watch all the characters grow closer as the adventure proceeded. I appreciated the minor characters in this story--especially Sir Jamison Mitchell. It was a great introduction to each of them for me.

I had never read books by either K.G. McAbee or Cynthia D. Witherspoon. Upon finishing Gilded Cages I saw that there are many other books that involve the characters and I look forward to reading more about them.
